This area was a US airfield during WWII. The northern side of the D443 is a small marker commemorating this. Take the N13 NW from Caen to Carentan then the D443 SW. The monument is on the northern side of the road before you reach downtown Méautis.
The 50th Fighter Group of Ninth US Air Force flew from this advanced landing ground A 17 built by the 840th Air Engrs Battalion 16.08 to 15.09 1944 In respectful memory of those who gave their lives for liberty.
